Beyond College

I actually began this post before spring break of my junior year. As in transitions of the past such as middle school to high school and high school to college, I have been ready to move on before my final year has begun.

School burns me out. There is no leaving work at work, because outside classes you are expected to do homework and study. On top of this class, commitments are independent of each other, so there is no telling one professor that one assignment is more important than another and you will be finishing that one first. Then you add in your extra curricular activities, and you have one strong recipe for stress.

I have fellow students who are energized by the thought of learning, but any more I cannot convince myself the best way to spend my time is studying. I miss learning about technology on my own, as I did when I first began to dabble with programming. I shouldn’t let the idea of being tested on the knowledge impede my enthusiasm to learn, but it does.

This ill-will toward school is why I’m spending my the fall of my senior year off campus at an internship. I’m excited for being done at the end of day and able to spend my time messing with technology as I please. I have personal technology goals that I am actually excited about pursuing.

My general goals are as follows:

  • Upgrade and customize WordPress
  • Create my dad’s site using Moodle and/or another CMS
  • Work through a SharePoint book
  • Know OOP concepts forward and backward
  • Get to know C# beyond the basics

I’m excited about it all. Now, I just have to fix my sleeping habits so I stop passing out upon returning home at the end of my workday.

  1. [...] Looking through past entries, I discovered Rebecca hosts a monthly goal meet-up for those interested in the career and life conversations on her blog. While I posted a set of learning goals, I’m hoping that having to interact with others about these goals will guilt trip me into accomplishing at least something. [...]
