@<a href="#comment-18054" rel="nofollow">Mom</a>:
Re-reading what I wrote, when I said "Republican household" I meant as seen by the outside world, mostly due to the Catholic stance on abortion. (Since this post was in preparation for putting myself out there to said outside world). Okay, that and Dad's political leanings. He was rather alone in that last presidential election. (I am still amused at how into the elections Grandpa (dad's dad) got, since I never hear him talk politics.) Right-o on my parents constantly nullifying the other's vote.

I did neglect to mention that in Fort Wayne the Republicans and Democrats are so close that I would never choose who to vote for based on their political party. I'm still so sad we essentially had no choice in our last mayor.

I need to revisit my sociology class notes and readings to get together a post on social programs/folks standing on their own two feet. That class touched on that very idea of whether or not programs in place coddle or help others help themselves.

Heck yes on being frustrated with congressmen who argue about health care reform when they have no worries themselves at taxpayers' expense.

Along the lines of political musings I am compelled to comment. Republican household. Really? It hasn't been unusual for me to negate Ashley's Dad's votes through the years. I have considered myself an Independent but when forced to decide in primary, I have chosen based on the particular election and candidates running for office. Traditionally as a Catholic - which I am one - you were considered liberal (fighting for the poor, social services, etc). Think of (fill in the blank) Kennedy. But I have such a problem with an unbalanced government budget (at any level) and excessive spending because I believe those who can stand on their own two feet (figuratively) - should - so I have a problem with some social programs which appear to coddle rather than facilitate helping others help themselves. As Ashley is aware, I have a huge issue with the health care plan that our federal government and politicians have crafted for themselves I want to get up and scream at them when they talk about excessive health care spending. People in glass houses... So, my political leanings? Hoosier sensibility. The right person for the right job. Phooey the political party.
