Hamlet – AP Eng video

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005

It’s done, it’s done!! It may have taken for fricken’ ever, but it’s sooo cool. Everyone will be forced to watch it. Muwahaha.

The only lil’ bitty problem is the fact that on one of my DVD players, the sound doesn’t work in 3 scenes. (Why some and not the others? I don’t understand!) So I’m making a .wmv (Windows Media Video) file and bringing it in on my USB drive just in case. And if I can find an empty tape, I’ll tape it onto it. But I’m pretty sure that even if doesn’t play on Boesch’s main DVD player, it should play on her computer.

I can’t wait to show the class. I do believe we will live up to our reputation (however small it is).

A non-horn player guest artist!

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

As I was checking on the days of jazz fests, I discovered that Western Michigan’s guest artist is a vibraphonist! His name is Stefon Harris and after visting his website (Requires Flash*) I’m seriously excited about seeing him. He sounds awesome! (Thank you Chris, I can never say nor type that word without thinking about how I pronounce it.)

I’m going to have to check with King on Monday to make sure that we’re still going to this jazz fest. Though I don’t know what else we’d do on March 11th. I don’t think there are any other jazz fests that happen on that day. (Well, I’m sure there are…but none that we’d attend.)

I wonder if there will be any other rhythm section guest artists this year. It’d be nice since all the fests we attended last year had horn players (minus David Baker). Once they get beyond improv and into things such as breathing or specifics to their instruments…clinics tends to get boring.

Okay, I want one of Stefon’s albums.

Er, CDs. That was an odd slip…

*Updated October 30, 2005: Originally I had to open it in IE, but today I found the problem. I have the Adblock extension installed for Firefox and apparently if “Obj-Tags” is enabled in Adblock, Flash 8 won’t work.

If you’re having the same problem, here are two solutions:

To temporarily fix this until Adblock releases an update with the fix disable Obj-Tags:
Tools -> Extensions -> select Adblock -> Options -> Adblock Options -> Obj-Tags

Install the Adblock Plus extension which has already fixed the problem plus has a couple of extra features that the original Adblock does not offer.

Being sick leads to me not being productive.

Tonite I needed to finish up my reading response journal for English, read my Bedford Reader assingment, and…well, I’m sure there were other things.

But my sore throat began to really bother me and I ended up falling asleep on the couch.

I hate the let down after marching band. Anytime I relax…I get sick.

King, you need to start Siders soon. Very, very soon. That way I won’t get sick.

Redskin Robotics

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

So as of today I am a part of North Side’s robotics club. As of this moment, I am the lone female member. But, seriously, I’m not even a bit surprised. (Alright, I have very little time to write a detailed post, so if this turns out pathetic…this will qualify as my disclaimer.) Apparently I’m in charge of building the Web site. Ben and Morgan also voted that I get to pick the name, but that’s just cause they didn’t want to think of a name themselves. I really hope that jazz band doesn’t clash too bad with this…but I’m sure it will. (Seeing as the meetings are Tuesdays and Thurdays from 2:45 to 3:30.) So…maybe…something can get worked out. I hope…especially since Chris O’Brian also may be a member. But he wasn’t sure, so I may be the only one with a problem.

I’m kinda excited about this. I’ve always loved building stuff with Legos, K’nex, and any other building stuff that was at my house at one point or another. (Blocks, Lincoln Logs, the metal stuff…Construx?)

Off to my last Wednesday nite rehearsal!

State Week

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

When I first started Computer Programming, I was amazed at how few people I knew. It was like a very odd clean slate. A few weeks into the class, I finally realized that only one or two kids knew I’m in band. What a very strange revelation. It’s hard to think of me, a North Side student, without thinking about band.

But I’m pretty sure everyone knows I’m a band person through and through after finding out I’m coming into school at 2:30 in the morn this coming Saturday. That and the fact that I basically begged Sapper to get over to my computer and grade my last application so that I could leave and go to band. Plus I didn’t go to class at all yesterday cause I was in the band room watching the tape / playing (the little we did play).

So yeah, speaking of marching band…

Today’s rehearsal was…unproductive? I mean, the run through sucked. We didn’t work on anything other than those last few sets and since we haven’t been outside since Saturday, the run through sucked. It didn’t feel as though we got very much accomplished in the past two days. By God tomorrow nite’s rehearsal better be a bad ass rehearsal, cause we desperately need it. Oh geez…

Tomorrow is my last Wednesday nite rehearsal. Oh dear. I don’t like thinking about how final it is. It still hasn’t completely sunk in even though I realize it is the last one…

So, god damn it, it better be the best frickin’ Wednesday nite rehearsal this year! I want to get stuff much improved. I have this somewhat dreaded feeling in the pit of my stomach about Saturday and I hate the fact that it’s there. I want it to disappear, I want my wishes of a spectacular senior finish at State to come true.

Sigh.

I should attend all of lunch tomorrow so I can talk with Ryan about this. He gets all riled up about this and probably would have a better time getting other people pumped up than I would.

I still cannot believe how laidback today’s rehearsal was. It was insane. It was fun at the time, but in retrospect I gotta say, no more of that!

We’re going to the Dome!

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

I do believe that was the best quiet time ever. I have no idea whose idea it was to do all of that, but it was awesome. God, I’m going to miss everyone and band itself when this year is done. This senior class…man, I’m glad it is what is. I have not a clue what I would have done at NS without them.

So, moving on to the subject of State, here’s the draw for next Saturday:

Northview
Greenwood
North Side
Jasper
Dekalb
Greenfield-Central
Carroll
Columbus East
Concord
Floyd Central

Sigh. What a lovely placing. Right in the middle of the Big Three from the South. And so early. I don’t even want to think about how early we’re going to have to get to North Side. However, with it being (basically) the complete opposite of our Regional’s draw, maybe it will be a good thing. Yeah…

Anyway, we are all going to have to give the performance of our lives. This week our rehearsals have to be completely kick butt. I’m planning on going in early so I can finish my last project in Computer Programming so that I can go to band fourth period and watch the tape / listen to King’s uber-long speech. Wait! King won’t be there. (How did I forget that?) Ah well, I still want to watch the tape. Maybe I can get a hold of the percussion or music tape. I still haven’t listened to even one this year. I’ve been missing out.

Speaking of percussion (i.e. pit)…

As I was about to fall asleep on the couch after eating lunch, the phone rings. For whatever reason my dad wakes me to give it to me. Turns out it was Jake’s mom with some not good news.

This morning at around 2:00 am Jake had to have emergency surgery to remove his appendix. He then had some sort of complications (something respiratory related) and ended up in intensive care. He will be out of school for the rest of the week, but the doctor did clear him to perform on Saturday. (He was really concerned about this which is absolutely understandable.)

Sigh. That really sucks. Plus his birthday is this week. Man. I still can’t believe I haven’t even seen him since we performed. Bleh, none of that is pleasant.

People in North Side’s band need to stop getting sick and injured! It’s beyond ridiculous now.

This year… *insert a frustrated noise.* It all has been just that…frustrating. In talking with King after getting off the bus, he even seemed frustrated. He says he doesn’t really understand the visual score we got. Though, in watching the tape…there were things I saw (some spacing issues, people missing a couple step-offs). But at that point, King hadn’t seen the tape. He started talking about how we don’t have all the choreography that other bands have and that may be what is effecting our score. Marcus then said the thing about how visual is only 40%, but went on to say it sure doesn’t feel like it this year.

You know what? This isn’t fun telling my section that Jake’s in the hospital. (Not that something like that could be fun…) Especially since I know very little about the situation. I know only the vague details. But since the doc cleared him for Saturday, I guess he’s going to be fine.

Update on English

Monday, October 10th, 2005

Boesch is insane. We are doing an Act a day (which wasn’t a surprise) AND we’re doing a story a day out of Bedford Reader. Plus we’ve got an LSP and a Literary Test.

Sigh.

But I’ve talked to her, and she is aware of the band situation. So hopefully she’ll be nice like she implied in the convo I had with her.

Thinking of Carroll HS leaves me agitated.

Monday, October 10th, 2005

I am SICK of losing to Carroll. Every stinking competition they beat us. We can’t even manage to get our hands on a GE award.

I wish I could see a tape of their show at Homestead and at Snider. I want to know why they went from only being 1 point ahead of us to 4.45 points ahead of us. I understand (from what King said) that our visual wasn’t all that great at the night show and that our intensity wasn’t quite as…intense, but does that justify that big of a change. Err…okay, now that I’ve typed that it kinda does justify it. Sorta. Still, Carroll 77.95 and us 73.80? (Of course now that I’ve typed those scores I go back to questioning it.)

Ack, I wish I could see a tape of them. So I could have something to go on other than those scores.

(Ack, I’ve tried writing this paragraph about seven times now. Last try…)

If there is anyone tomorrow who makes any noise to the effect that we should not have lost to Carroll, bleh on them. Not one kid got to see their performance at either of the two shows on Saturday. King or Marcus did even get to! Saying anything other than we need to work harder is not a good idea. (A sort of disclaimer: Hopefully that’s not too broad of a statement.)

(There, that works.)

Which brings me to my next thought process: We better work our arses off in the coming two weeks. I hate stepping up at the last minute, but I do hope some of the section leaders do so and subsequently keep their section in line. (Preferably as straight as possible, unless of course it’s a curve of some sort. “Concave or convex?”) I know this was attempted either last week or the week before, but this time it is critical. Beyond critical in fact, it’s basic need. As in food, shelter, and clothes. That is what it’ll take for us to beat Carroll (and in doing so, beat Concord).

Too bad school insists on interferring with all this. Hopefully all we do in English is Shakespeare. Though she’ll probably throw in LSP and one last Literary Terms test. However, if she tries to assign Bedford Reader, I will protest.

Pit Hoodies

Friday, October 7th, 2005

I cannot wait until I get my hoodie for this year.

Front left crest:

Front of the 2005 Pit Hoodie

Back:

Back of the 2005 Pit Hoodie

Isn’t the back freakin’ awesome? I thought so. Oh, wow. I just noticed that Andy even got which mallet goes over which correct. (Well, unles you’re Julia.) Too cool!

If the back image turns out even close to what the above image is, I’ll be beyond excited.

2005 Concord Marching Invitational

Sunday, September 18th, 2005

That was one of the more eventful competitions I’ve been invloved in. And most certainly not in a good way.

The actual rehearsal was interesting. On Friday we gained a pit member. (He’s actually a trombonist, but he joined too late to march.) (He had been just coming to all rehearsals and competitions, but all he did was start/stop the Dr. Beat.) So as a result of this, we decided to create a part for Jake on mallets and let Mohammad (sp?!) have Jake’s auxilary part. Clayton spent a lot of the rehearsal working with Jake (the band was working on drill) and I spent a small portion teaching Mo what notes to hit (on the chimes) and when to hit ‘em.

The problem we ran into was the fact that we’re not to play when the band is fixing drill. This is so the DMs can hear when the staff is done and can kick off whatever we’re to play next. So, because of this, we got yelled at while Clayton was creating the part for Jake and when Clayton had Jake play his part to check and make sure he was still playing it correctly. (Well, those weren’t the only times we got yelled at, but those were more prominent.) After the last time of getting yelled at, Clayton got really pissed and just went to a cart and sat down.

Sigh. (Thankfully, he did cool down and came back and helped Jake w/o geting yelled at.)

This is where it’s difficult for the pit. (Well, other than trying to figure out who the hell we’re supposed to listen to or watch for time.) (I swear, if I count how many times we’ve been told conflicting answers in the past two weeks…) During rehearsals earlier in the season, the drill is what gets the most attention. As a result of this, the pit gets to stand and do nothing often. Clayton told me the reason for this is that King says as soon as the band gets their feet under them, the music will improve. Okay, that makes sense, but still…it’s frustrating to have things go wrong over and over and we can’t really work on them cause we can’t play.

I do know one thing: now that we finally have the pit trailer back, we will warm up before we come down to the parking lot. So, that will no longer be an issue.

So after the oh-so-fun rehearsal, we packed up our stuff (+ the drumline’s cause they can’t possibly do it themselves) and ate. After missing the pre-travel talk from King on account of helping put the drummers crap away, I headed out to the buses (w/the rest of the band) only to find out they’re all the way in the furthest parking lot. Apparently some neighbors called the cops because the senior bus was parked in front of a fire hydrant. So, that wasn’t too big of a deal…but it was only the beginning of the bus ride issues.

Before we even left North Side (we had just pulled onto State) (and I’m pretty sure this is when the following happened, it may have been a little bit later), the guard bus and the freshmen bus collided w/each other. So we sat in traffic (for waaay to long), and headed out to the bus place by Northrop. When we left there I do believe we were something like 30 – 45 minutes behind schedule.

(BTW, our bus driver drove crazy fast the entire time. When we crossed Lima, our bus flew over a bunch of bumps and we bounced all over the place!)

Then when we arrived in Elkhart, the 3 of the 5 buses went right on by Concord HS. That was great. So, needless to say, everyone was rushing about trying to get ready. Thank goodness we had left all the cymbals on their stands!

So, after a bit of rushing, the whole band was dressed and ready and the pit instruments and props were all loaded onto their carts. Only problem was, the pit crew was not paying attention and the band left w/o us. (Usually somebody comes and tells us to go, but there are competitions where we’re left to fend for ourselves.) So after rushing (practically aimlessly, since we didn’t even know which warm up we were in) to warm up, we made it.

So after all this rush, rush, rush…the actual show seemed to fly by like it never happened. It was weird, though, cause even though the show felt like it was over in a snap…it was comfortable. Comfortable as in, no huge honking mistakes happened (from what I could hear).

Hopefully, next weekend will go tons smoother. Cause I never want to do that again.
